We all have decisions we make in life.
Some of us choose to make bigger decisions than others. We may choose to move across the country, across the ocean, across the world. We may choose to pack up our old job and change careers. We may try to buy a house instead of renting an apartment. We may try to elect a new President. Marriage. Divorce. Children. Monogamy. Polyamory. Friends: Love them or Leave them. We have to make the choice.
Change. That is a scary word or an exciting time. It involves altering the familiar. Sometimes it's our choice to change, other times it's not. It's better when we get to choose, it's somehow more empowering. But when it's forced upon us, we still have to deal with it. Because change is not always a choice, but it is a constant in life.
You can't change anybody else. That's something to learn early on and something to rememeber until you can't remember anything anymore. The only person you are responsible for changing is yourself. If you fear change, because you fear missed opportunity in your place of comfort, you are missing out on other equally, if not more, enriching opportunity.
We are all conflicted about change. Maybe there are times in our life when we will be everything we hoped we would become, but life is always about internal conflict and the drive for more. Unless, of course, we choose to lead a life that simply breathes on it's own, a life that we don't care all that much about. A life of going through the motions. You may always be conflicted. But life is about learning, so take your conflicts and make them your education.
We're all looking for change. Some of us just don't know what to do when we find it. Just do it. Nike was right, even if they hired too many poor, sweatshop workers. You can always go back to what you have, even if what you go back to isn't exactly like it was before.
How could it be? You've experienced conflict. You've initiated change. You have done something that makes you a different person than the one you were even an hour before.
You are not alone and even in your loneliest moments, somebody, somewhere gets you. That is the only comfort I can offer at a time when we are all in need of change.
